More Guns, Less Crime 1998-2003
Chris Mooney has an obituary for John Lott's fraudulent thesis in a great
Mother Jones article. Glenn Reynolds has
some thoughts, and with only mild criticism seems to endorse the piece. Tim Lambert has
a post on it, and Mooney has more background, including transcripts of Lott interviews,
on his blog.
I find the article to be devastatingly on target, and I believe that anyone still defending Lott after reading it must be suffering from fundamentalism induced denial.
My only gripe about the piece is the characterization of pro-gun Second Amendment interpretation as "revisionist". I don't think that's fair given the fact that the question of whether or not the Second is an individual liberty has never been addressed by the USSC.
Having been the first blogger to
question Lott's work, I am extremely gratified to look back on the role the blogs have played in bringing this issue to wider public attention.
UPDATE: John Lott responds, weakly, to Mooney, and the ever vigilant Tim Lambert has
already shot him down (pun intended).
